Air Conditioners - RoamerLife

Replacing a dead or dying roof AC is urgent, especially when a spring-storage startup goes wrong. This guide helps owners choose a replacement or upgrade. The big decisions are BTUs, heat-pump capability, low-profile clearance, and ducted versus unducted fit.As an Amazon Associate, RoamerLife earns from qualifying purchases. How we ranked theseWe ranked cooling capacity, with roughly 15,000 BTUs a practical target for many RVs, heat-pump usefulness, roof profile and clearance, weight, ducted versus unducted fit, and brand support. Dometic 651816 stays our primary pick for a typical replacement.RV air conditioner quick picksModelBest forWhy it makes the listDometic 651816Most roof-AC replacements15,000 BTUs, low profile, heat pumpAirxcel Mach 15High cooling demand15,000 BTU airflow, optional heatingDometic 640315CLow-profile cooling without heat13,500 BTUs and compact profileDometic Brisk IIAirflow and lighter roof weight15,000 BTUs and generous openingsAirxcel Mach 3Smaller rigs or optional heat13,500 BTUs and strong airflow1. Dometic 651816Check price on AmazonBest for: Most owners replacing a roof unit. Skip if: Your opening, controls, or electrical setup are not compatible. This remains our top pick because it balances many replacement needs. The low profile can help with roof clearance and wind drag, while 15,000 BTUs give useful headroom for hot days. It also has a heat pump and can work with ducted or unducted layouts.2. Airxcel Mach 15Check price on AmazonBest for: Campers prioritizing cooling and airflow. Skip if: A low-profile roofline or built-in heat pump is your first priority. The Mach 15 brings 15,000 BTUs and a powerful motor for serious summer heat. An add-on heating option leaves room to adapt later. It is taller than a low-profile unit, so compare clearance and fit first.3. Dometic 640315CCheck price on AmazonBest for: Owners wanting lower-profile AC without a heat pump. Skip if: You regularly camp in very hot conditions with one unit or want electric shoulder-season heat. This unit keeps a sleek profile while stepping down to 13,500 BTUs and leaving out the heat pump. It can suit a smaller RV or a replacement where cooling is the only job.4. Dometic Brisk IICheck price on AmazonBest for: RVers who want 15,000 BTUs and strong airflow without as much roof weight. Skip if: Your rig has tight overhead clearance or needs a low-profile design. The Brisk II uses a taller shape for larger air openings and plenty of airflow. It is rated at 15,000 BTUs and is lighter than some comparable units. The taller profile is the tradeoff, so check clearance around the roof.5. Airxcel Mach 3Check price on AmazonBest for: Smaller rigs or owners wanting solid cooling with optional heat. Skip if: You are watching roof weight closely or need 15,000 BTUs.The Mach 3 is rated at 13,500 BTUs and can move 320 cubic feet of air per minute. Heating is optional. The tradeoffs are its heavier, bulkier form and the extra work of getting it onto the roof. What To Look For In An RV Air ConditionerBTUsStart with the cooling load: BTUs tell you how much heat the unit can remove. A 13,500 BTU unit is common, but 15,000 BTUs is often better for a larger or warmer-running RV. If one unit must cool several rooms, avoid sizing below the job.Size and ShapeChoose a roof shape that suits driving and campsite clearance. A low-profile unit can reduce wind drag, while a taller design may trade height for larger air openings. Measure before ordering.Dual Use RV Air Conditioners With Heat PumpChoose a heat pump when you want mild-weather electric heat and less propane use while plugged in. It is not a full furnace replacement in genuinely cold weather, so confirm the feature or supported add-on.WeightUse roof and overall weight as a tie-breaker after confirming capacity and fit. A lighter unit can ease installation and preserve carrying capacity. Check listed weight if your rig is close to its limits.Ducted vs Unducted Air ConditionersMatch the new AC to how your RV distributes air. Ducted units connect to ceiling ducts and vents in multiple rooms, while unducted units discharge directly through the ceiling assembly. Check the opening, interior assembly, controls, and wiring before assuming a swap is simple.Final ThoughtsFor the broadest replacement fit, start with the Dometic 651816. Choose the Airxcel Mach 15 for hot-weather cooling; the Dometic 640315C for low-profile cooling without heat; the Dometic Brisk II for airflow and lighter roof weight; or the Airxcel Mach 3 for a smaller rig or optional heat.Confirm BTUs, clearance, weight, ducting, controls, and electrical compatibility before buying.
